Driver’s Licence Classes

There are several classes of licence in Alberta. Each class has it’s own requirements and allowances.

CLASS 1 PROFESSIONAL

Requirements

  • Minimum Licensing Age: 18
  • Must hold a valid Full Class 5 driver’s licence or higher.

Holders May

  • Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles other than a motorcycle (Class 6).
  • Operate a Class 6 vehicle as a learner only.

Steps to Obtain

  1. Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 1 drivers licence you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination. If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.
  2. Air Brake Certificate: Proof of your air brake “Q” endorsement or a course completion certificate from an approved air brake course is required before a road test can be given. This includes drivers of farm vehicles registered as tractor-trailers.
  3. Road Test: Come see us and we can book a road test for you. A tractor-trailer combination vehicle with three or more axles and equipped with air brakes must be provided by the applicant.
  4. Medical Exam: A medical form must be completed by your doctor to insure the safety of yourself and others. You can download and print this medical form here.

When you are ready to re-class your licence, come into our Southland Registrations office with all the documents mentioned above and our friendly staff will assist you. For road test related questions, please contact our office at 403-255-3653.

CLASS 2 PROFESSIONAL

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 18
      • Must hold a valid Full Class 5 driver’s licence or higher.

Holders May

      • Operate Buses.
      • Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 3, Class 4 or Class 5 operator’s licence may operate.
      • Operate Class 1 and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.

Steps to Obtain

      1. Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 2 drivers licence you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination. If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.
      2. Road Test: Come see us and we can book a road test for you. You must provide a bus with seating capacity exceeding 24 passengers excluding the operator for a road test. If the bus you are driving is equipped with air brakes, you must provide proof of your “Q” endorsement or have your air brake course completion certificate.
      3. Medical Exam: A medical form must be completed by your doctor to insure the safety of yourself and others. You can download and print this medical form here.

When you are ready to re-class your licence, come into our Southland Registrations office with all the documents mentioned above and our friendly staff will assist you.

CLASS 3 PROFESSIONAL

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 18
      • Must hold a valid Full Class 5 driver’s licence or higher.

Holders May

      • Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operators may operate.
      • Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles.
      • Operate any single motor vehicle with three or more axles towing a trailer with one or more axles if the trailer is not equipped with air brakes.
      • Operate Class 2 or Class 4 type vehicles without passengers.
      • Operate Class 1, Class 2 and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.
      • Note: Drivers of single-motor vehicles registered as a farm vehicle do not require an air brake “Q” endorsement.

Holders May Not

      • Operate a motor vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15.
      • Operate a motor vehicle to transport passengers for hire.

If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.

If the vehicle you are driving is equipped with air brakes, you must provide proof of your “Q” endorsement or have your air brake course completion certificate. CLASS 4 AMBULANCES & TAXIS

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 18
      • Must hold a valid Full Class 5 driver’s licence or higher.

Holders May

      • Operate any motor vehicle or combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence may operate.
      • Operate a bus that has a seating capacity of not more than 24 excluding the operator.
      • Operate an ambulance or taxi.
      • Operate Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.

Steps to Obtain

      1. Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 4 drivers licence you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination. If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.

CLASS 5 GDL BASIC (PROBATIONARY)

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 18, or 16 with the consent of a parent or guardian.
      • Must hold a valid Class 7 licence with at least one year of driving experience under the previous licence.

Holders Are Subject to the Following Conditions

      • Fewer demerit points are allowed than for fully licenced drivers before licence suspension.
      • Must have a zero alcohol level at all times when driving.
      • Cannot upgrade to a commercial licence.
      • Cannot have more passengers than there are seat belts.
      • Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a Learner.
      • Can otherwise operate any motor vehicle as though they held a full Class 5 licence.

CLASS 5 ADVANCED (NON-GDL)

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 18
      • Must hold a valid Class 5 GDL licence with at least two years of driving experience under the previous licence.
      • Must be suspension free for a minimum of one year before testing.

Holders May

      • Operate a two-axle single motor vehicle.
      • Operate a recreational vehicle with not more than three axles.
      • Operate a two-axle motor vehicle or a two-axle recreational vehicle towing a trailer with one or more axles if the trailer is not equipped with air brakes.
      • Operate three-axle recreational vehicle and a trailer if the trailer has not more than two-axles and is not equipped with air brakes.
      • Operate Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.
      • Operate a moped.

Holders May Not

      • Operate a motor vehicle with a seating capacity of more than 15.
      • Operate a motor vehicle transporting passengers for hire.
      • Operate a motor vehicle equipped with air brakes unless the operator has an air brake endorsement or if a two-axle air brake equipped vehicle is registered in Alberta as a farm vehicle.

CLASS 6 MOTORCYCLES

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age : 16
      • Must hold a valid Class 7 licence with at least one year of driving experience under the previous licence.

Requirements for carrying passengers

      • Adequate passenger hand grips.
      • Adequate passenger seat.
      • Adequate footrests.

Additional Conditions

      • When learning to drive Class 6 vehicles, an instructor must be at least 18 years old, must have a Class 6 non-GDL licence, and must either sit behind the learner on the motorcycle itself or immediately follow the learner in another vehicle.

All online road test bookings must be paid for via PayPal, Visa or MasterCard. If you are providing your own vehicle for the test, it must not include a side-car.

CLASS 7 (LEARNERS)

Requirements

      • Minimum Licensing Age: 14

Learners Licence Holder Conditions

      • Must be accompanied by a fully licensed (non-GDL) driver who is 18 years of age or older and is seated next to the driver.
      • Learners are not permitted to drive from midnight to 5am.
      • Must have a zero alcohol level.

Holders May

      • Operate Class 5 and Class 6 vehicles as a learner only.
      • Operate a moped.

Steps To Obtain

      • Written Exam: To start the process of obtaining your Class 7 driver’s licence you must first take the written examination. Come into our office with your identification to take a 30 multiple choice question examination. If you wish to come in to write an exam, please ensure that you arrive no later than 30 minutes before we close.
      • Identification: If you don’t already have an Alberta ID Card, you will need to provide proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada. If you were born in Canada, this will be a Birth Certificate, a valid Passport, or an Indian Status Card. If not, we also accept Work and Study Permits, Permanent Residency, and Citizenship Certificates. Applicants in Canada on a Visitor Permit are NOT eligible to apply.
      • If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian to accompany you. If you are over the age of 18, we will require proof of your Alberta address.
      • The applicant must pass an eye examination administered by our friendly staff.
